Spent most of 2006 in NZ. Would recommend buying a  second hand car (you'll get your money's worth with all the site seeing you do!). We got our car at a car auction at Ellersie Racecourse, Auckland. Sold it then at a car auction in Christchurch. These car auctions seem to be a good place to get a cheap, decent car. Mechanic onsite to give any car you consider a once over for a small fee.

Also, would recommend staying in holiday parks (even over staying in hostels). Cheap, clean, basic accomm. Most, if not all, have cabins that'd fit 2 people. Some literally have a bed, others have a sink, kettle, toaster etc. aswell. Shared toilet facilities but you would get over that because it is so cheap to stay. Would recommend Top 10 Holiday Parks.

If you are going to work over there, make sure you have your working visa sorted. All employers will ask for a copy (well, anyone I was employed with when I was there). Also, if you can, register with a temping agency. According to people I worked with over, I got more money per hour because I was recruited through an agency rather than directly. Dunno how true this is but tis worth a shot!

(some of my fave "cheap but excellent food" eateries in NZ)
