Some usual key pointers:

At Bangkok airport use the pre-arranged official taxis at arrivals. The English speaking guys at the desk give you a slip of paper at the booth to hand to the taxi driver. It states where you are going and the fare.

It's not unusual for taxi drivers to not speak any English in Thailand, even in Bangkok. Carry a card with the name and address of your hotel in Thai and a map with you. Most hotels will provide one. Alternatively a photo of a nearby monument.

Tuk Tuk drivers in Bangkok are more likely to speak English but this mode of transport is far less environmentally friendly. They are also likely to try and take you to their mates tailor shop, or tell you that a temple is "closed"!

Don't stand on a street corner with a map. If you are lost step inside a store or bar to check your map and find your bearings.

Be discreet with your belongings / camera and exersise the same caution you would elsewhere. Get a luggage tag for your bags on buses if possible, when they are stowed in the hold.

Never leave your belongings unattended at an airport, or accept anything to carry on board from anyone, or agree to check in anything for anyone.

Shop around when booking tours and trips at agencies such as along Bangkok's Thanon Khao San

Cambodia's boat from Siem Reap to Penom Penh: most people agree that sitting on the roof of the boat is the safer and more pleasant option. Keep yur bags with you. Whatever the weather, keep sunscreen handy, tie hair back, and be able to wrap up warm! Prepare to be more than a little windswept.
