Some useful tips for Finnish Lapland:
Taking the train from Helsinki to Ravaniemi is a great way to travel north - the overnight sleepers are reasonable and very comfortable. From Rovaniemi you can either explore the most accessible areas of lapland or access a network of buses to take you further into the arctic wilderness.
Some good activity companies based in Rovaniemi:
Lapland Safaris: www.lapinsafarit.fi
Arctic Safaris: www.arcticsafaris.fi
Northern Gate: www.northerngatesafaris.com
There is a reindeer farm just a short walk from Santa Claus Visit on the Artic Circle where you can have a short sleigh ride for approx 16 Euros which is much cheaper than what many tour companies offer. The ski area near Rovaniemi is also worth a day's attention if you like skiing or boarding. There are some nice tree runs and a half pipe; rarely any queues and if you are there late in the season the runs are open until as late as 8pm sometimes. You can hire gear at the foot of the slopes.
